While we may not have had the opportunity to bring you

“Lady T” (RIP), you can experience how & C & B Entertainment Productions get’s down once again on July 20th at C & B Entertainment Productions 3rd Annual #SouthernSoulBluesOnTheRiver at the ArethaFranklinAmphitheater.

Mary Christine Brockert, born on March 5, 1956, and known professionally as Teena Marie, was an American soul and R&B singer, songwriter, and producer. Before adopting the stage name Teena Marie, she was recognized by her childhood nickname Tina. Later, she earned the nickname Lady T from her collaborator and friend, Rick James.

Teena Marie was celebrated for her unique soprano vocals, often leading listeners to believe she was of African-American descent. Her contributions to R&B and soul music earned her the title of Ivory Queen of Soul. She was also a skilled musician, playing rhythm guitar, keyboards, and congas. Over her career, she received four Grammy Award nominations.

Born in Santa Monica, California, to Thomas Leslie Brockert and Mary Anne, Teena Marie spent her early years in Mission Hills, California. She embraced her diverse ethnic heritage, which included Belgian, Portuguese, Italian, Irish, and Native American roots. During a visit to Louisiana, she discovered her paternal ancestors’ ties to New Orleans.

Teena Marie’s musical journey began at a young age, performing songs like Harry Belafonte’s “Banana Boat Song” by age two. Her parents supported her talent by arranging auditions, leading to appearances in shows like The Beverly Hillbillies. She further honed her skills by teaching herself to play the guitar, bass, and congas, eventually forming a band with her brother and cousin.

In the early 1970s, the family relocated to Venice, California, where Teena Marie was influenced by the vibrant music scene of the historically black enclave known as “Venice Harlem.” She received spiritual guidance from Berthalynn Jackson, a prominent figure in the community who became her godmother.

Teena Marie’s musical career took off when she caught the attention of Motown Records producer Hal Davis. Though initially intended for a film project, she was signed as a solo artist by Berry Gordy, the label’s founder. Her debut album, Wild and Peaceful, produced by Rick James, marked the beginning of her successful partnership with Motown.

Throughout the 1980s, Teena Marie continued to release hit albums such as Lady T, Irons in the Fire, and Starchild, showcasing her talent as a singer, songwriter, and producer. Despite facing legal battles with Motown, she emerged as one of the label’s most successful artists.

Transitioning to Epic Records in the early 1980s, Teena Marie released acclaimed albums like Robbery and Starchild, which featured chart-topping singles like “Lovergirl” and “Out on a Limb.” She explored various musical styles, including rock and funk, further cementing her reputation as a versatile artist.

In the 1990s, Teena Marie’s music continued to resonate with audiences, earning her recognition as a pioneer in blending R&B, soul, and hip-hop. Despite facing challenges in securing record deals, she remained dedicated to her craft, releasing albums like Passion Play and Black Rain.

Teena Marie made a triumphant return to the music scene in the 2000s, signing with Cash Money Records and releasing successful albums like La Doña and Sapphire. She continued to experiment with jazz influences in her music, culminating in the release of Congo Square in 2009.

Tragically, Teena Marie passed away on December 26, 2010, leaving behind a legacy of groundbreaking music and artistic innovation. She was remembered fondly by fans and fellow musicians alike, who honored her contributions to the world of R&B and soul.

“Celebrating Bobby Rush: A 3x Grammy-Winning Blues Legend!” Celebrating Bobby Rush.

Bobby Rush A Grammy-Winning Blues Legend
Bobby Rush A Grammy-Winning Blues Legend

Hey there, C&B Southern Soul Blues Society! Did y’all catch the news? Despite Detroit’s distance from the blues heartlands of Mississippi and Alabama, we’re still feeling the Blues! Our heartfelt congratulations go out to Mississippi blues legend Bobby Rush for snagging his third Grammy Award last Sunday night! Rush clinched the award for Traditional Blues Album with his stellar work on “All My Love For You.” In case you didn’t know, Bobby Rush is an American blues musician, composer, and singer whose style incorporates elements of blues, rap, and funk. With a whopping twelve Blues Music Awards under his belt, Rush’s influence on the genre is undeniable.

But the accolades don’t stop there. Alongside Rush, our very own Crystal Springs native Dexter Allen played a pivotal role as both a blues musician and engineer on the album. It’s a testament to Rush’s mentorship that Allen has now clinched his very first Grammy, and we couldn’t be prouder of their joint success.

Allen expressed his gratitude towards Rush, saying, “I’ve listened to him over the years. I’ve watched him do things, and how he does things. I’ve learned a lot of things to do. I’ve learned a lot of things not to do, as well.” The bond between them goes beyond music; as Allen affectionately puts it, “The world and most people call him Bobby Rush, but I call him pops.”

Even after winning his first Grammy, Allen has big plans for this year. “I’ll be releasing my album this year. I didn’t get to release my album last year because I was working on his,” Allen said. “I said, ‘You know what? I’m going to release my album this year.’ So, I’ll be releasing new music this year.” Additionally, Allen will be collaborating with Rush on new projects, promising even more exciting developments in the world of blues music.

In 2017, at the age of 83, Rush won his first Grammy Award for the album, “Porcupine Meat.” Now, with his third Grammy win, Rush continues to inspire us all with his talent, perseverance, and unwavering dedication to the blues.

Congratulations Bobby Rush! You are a true inspiration to all of us. GOD has truly blessed you. We @C&B wish you happiness, health, and wealth to you & your family in everything you do. #CandBWishes #BobbyRush #GrammyWinner 🎶

Motown Kennedy

Mrs Kennedy is Motown Kennedy

In the vibrant tapestry of the Motown era, the life of Geneva Kennedy, one-half of the dynamic C&B Entertainment Productions Queens, is a captivating story of resilience, unexpected turns, and the undeniable call of destiny. Born as Geneva Eason in Jacksonville, Georgia, her early life took an unforeseen twist when, at the tender age of 14, her father passed away, and her mother suffered a stroke. In the midst of family challenges, Geneva and her mother decided to move to the Motor City, Detroit, where her siblings could care for her ailing mother. This marked a significant shift for Geneva, transitioning from the rural South to the bustling streets of Motown. High school at Cooley High on Hubble and Fenkell presented a cultural shock for the young Geneva. The South, still deeply entrenched in segregation, had limited opportunities, and the move to Detroit meant adapting to an entirely new world. Navigating the challenges of a different educational system, Geneva found herself feeling like a loner, out of sync with the unfamiliar activities her peers enjoyed. However, necessity led her to seek employment, and her first job at the Fabulous Fox theater would unexpectedly become her entry point into the world of Motown.

In 1967, while employed at the Fox, Geneva was unacquainted with Motown and had never experienced a movie. Yet, the annual Motown review during Christmas seized her attention. During breaks, the staff, who all knew one another, would sneak upstairs and the ushers’ would let them watch the show. She was blown away by the likes of Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight, Marvin Gaye, and others, Geneva became captivated. Describing it as a talent show on steroids. When questioned about her standout favorite from her first Motown review, Geneva exclaimed, “Stevie! Stevie Wonder was my favorite. I loved him because I had never seen a young person like that before—like a star, singing, and captivating the audience like that.” Additionally, she loved Gladys Knight and the Pips, hailing from Georgia like herself. The first time she heard Gladys sing ‘Midnight Train To Georgia’ was unforgettable. Geneva also professed her love for Marvin Gaye, emphasizing that it wasn’t a slight to Smokey Robinson, Diana Ross and The Supremes, and others.

Life moved forward for Geneva—marriage, three children, a stint at IBM, and a surprising turn as a police officer. Her dedication to hard work, instilled by her challenging upbringing, led her to excel in various roles within the police force. Through her work, she discovered a sense of camaraderie she had missed in high school. The journey back into the music scene happened inadvertently through her nephew, Detroit rap pioneer Prince Vince. Although she had nothing to do with his career it was a sign of a connection to the music world that began to emerge. Eventually, she met Carolyn Bonner through her husband Milton’s Assisted Housing business, leading to the birth of C&B Entertainment Productions.

Currently, Geneva stands shoulder to shoulder with Carolyn Bonner, forging a path as a dynamic entrepreneur in the entertainment industry. The synergy between Carolyn’s visionary approach to elevated entertainment experiences and Geneva’s extensive work background forms an unstoppable duo propelling C&B’s triumphs. Their success resonates with narratives akin to emerging iconic African American female figures such as Pinky Cole (Slutty Vegan) and Lisa Price (Carol’s Daughter). Geneva, valuing authenticity over superficial norms, contributes to the robust community bond that defines C&B’s strength.

Stay tuned as C&B gears up to bring the biggest Southern Soul Blues show in 2024, and thank you for your support! 🌟

This golden ticket unlocks a world of perks for our patrons, including complimentary food, top-shelf liquor, free parking, and unique meet-and-greets with the artists. Why do we provide so many perks? We understand that you work hard for your money, and we always put ourselves in your shoes. In today’s economy, where vulnerability is widespread, people are searching for escapism, positivity, and safe entertainment. That’s where C&B comes in.

Due to the past three years of Covid restrictions, there’s been a scarcity of recreational activities for adults. People are understandably paranoid and long for safe ways to have fun. C&B’s solution? A grown folks party!

This journey started with a concert featuring Priscilla Price in a neighboring city. A conversation between Carolyn Bonner and Mrs. Kennedy sparked the idea. Mrs Price planted a priceless seed, prompting Mrs. Bonner to observe that what they received for their VIP experience didn’t justify the price. Drawing from her healthcare and cooking background, she realized that if they provided food and liquor they loved, they could pack venues with party people just like that other company did, even though they only offered sliders and Boonesfarm.

We’re committed to bringing back the grown folks’ party, and we work tirelessly throughout the year to make it happen. When it comes to partying, safety, and fun, you can trust us. C&B’s mission is to provide a Southern soul and blues music experience tailored for adults. We set the standard and mentor the next generation on how to party responsibly.

Thanks to emerging artists like King George, West Love, Tina P, and rising talents like J-Wonn, who seamlessly blend with legends like Johnny Taylor, Bobby Rush, Marvin Sease, and Sir Charles Jones, Southern soul and blues exude love and positivity. This genre is the new pop, suitable for all ages, without worrying about explicit lyrics. While there might be a bit of talk about love and life in blues, it’s all in good spirits. Our music bridges generational gaps, and C&B strives to be a positive cultural force.

Our standards guarantee that you can enjoy a family-reunion-like atmosphere without concerns about violence. So if you plan to join us, please behave accordingly, because the music sets the tone. Let’s keep the good times rolling!”

“Omar Cunningham: Celebrating Resilience, Music, and Soulful Journey”

Hey C&B Southern Soul Blues Society! Let’s raise our voices in a big Happy Birthday to the sensational Award-Winning Singer, Songwriter, and Producer, Omar Cunningham! Detroit, how many of you would love to experience Omar Cunningham’s electrifying performance at a C&B party? 🎶

Omar, born on December 12, 1968, in Birmingham, Alabama, emerged as a brilliant talent from challenging beginnings. His father’s early passing and his mother’s death when he was eleven shaped his path. Raised by grandparents, Omar’s journey in music began at age five in the church choir, continuing through high school, and blossoming as a member of the local R&B group, Midnight Blue.

Despite facing financial struggles in his early years, Cunningham’s passion for music led him to the University of Alabama before he decided to chase his musical dreams. Relocating to Atlanta in the early ’90s, he worked as a session musician and producer, establishing his label, C Note Records.

In 2000, Omar released his debut album, “Soul Treats,” followed by “Love Doctor” in 2002 and “Hell at the House” in 2003, which hit number 53 on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop chart. In 2003, a cancer diagnosis shifted his focus. After successful treatment, he committed to music full-time, delivering hits like “The Truth” (2006) and “The Best of Omar Cunningham” (2007).

Amassing awards like the Memphis Music Award for Best Male R&B Artist and the Nashville Music Award, Omar is a two-time Grammy nominee. His resilience, musical prowess, and heartfelt contributions have left an indelible mark on Southern soul. Cheers to a remarkable artist and a resilient soul!

“Gratitude and Recognition: Celebrating Community, Caregiving, and C&B Entertainment’s Mission”

“Hey Family! Today, I just had to pause and give a shout-out to yours truly, just like the iconic Snoop Dogg reminds us all, ‘Thank yourself!’

I was honored with a Certificate Of Recognition at Wayne Center’s 50th-anniversary luncheon. “Wayne Center” is an outstanding community mental health agency right here in Detroit, Michigan. They’ve been making strides in empowering individuals with disabling conditions and behavioral health care needs, enabling them to achieve independence and inclusion in our community. It’s incredibly humbling to be recognized for the 20 years of hard work I’ve dedicated to “K&K Assisted Living #2 LLC.”

Now, here’s a little something that often gets misconstrued. Being a care-giver is my life. My life isn’t solely about Southern Soul Blues music. Concerts have become a passion and an expression of the bonds we build with artists. Some might raise an eyebrow and say, ‘Mrs. Carolyn Bonner must be a groupie.’ Let’s set the record straight – it’s not about chasing fame; I’ve embodied it! My commitment is to keep artists employed, even if it means taking a hit on a show. C & B Entertainment Productions doesn’t break a sweat over unsold tickets because our bedrock is about nurturing relationships within our community, not merely the fickle music industry.

But what really sets us apart, and this is where the incredible Mrs. Geneva Kennedy steps in, is our devotion to providing artists with hospitality and warmth. We don’t just organize events; we craft experiences and nurture authentic relationships. It’s not just about offering employment; it’s about staying true and authentic.

After overcoming the battle of cancer and emerging stronger than ever, there’s no room for negativity in my life. If someone brings negative vibes, they don’t have a place in my world. I focus on the positive and channel my energy into our community. So, this award holds a special place in my heart.

“C&B” is on a mission to revolutionize the entertainment industry. We’re waving goodbye to the snobbish attitudes, focusing on creating unforgettable experiences. Our events are about delivering more than your money’s worth, from our exclusive #GoldenCircleVIPparty to the concerts.

However, since entering the entertainment scene, we’ve encountered our fair share of negativity. It’s regrettable, but it won’t deter us. We’re here to spread love, positivity, and good vibes. A big thanks to Wayne Center for recognizing the value we bring.

Ultimately, it’s the love and support of our community that means the world to us. Let’s continue to spread love and keep shining brightly!

American Music Celebrates Chuck Berry

Today C&B Southern Soul Blues Society, it’s time to give a nod to the one and only Chuck Berry, born on October 18, 1926, in St. Louis, Missouri. We all know Chuck as a rock ‘n’ roll trailblazer, but there’s more to his story – his blues roots run deep.

Hailing from Charles County, Missouri, Chuck Berry wasn’t just a rock ‘n’ roll icon; he was one of the most influential figures in rhythm-and-blues and rock-and-roll from the ’50s to the ’70s. Classics like “Hoochie Coochie Man,” “St. Louis Blues,” “House of Blue Lights,” “21 Blues,” and “Blues Feeling” are just a glimpse of his bluesy side. He wasn’t merely a dabbler in blues; he was a bona fide blues man.

But here’s the twist – Chuck’s influence extended even into Southern Soul Blues, where “the stand up in it man” Theodis Ealey found inspiration in this legendary figure. It’s like a blues inception – blues within rock within blues!

Chuck Berry’s influence wasn’t limited to his music; he played a significant role in shaping The Rolling Stones during their early days. And here’s a fascinating tidbit: Elvis was undoubtedly an icon, but did you know the Beatles re-recorded Chuck Berry’s hits? In their early days, they grooved to at least 15 of Berry’s tracks. John Lennon, in particular, appreciated Chuck’s knack for writing social-comment songs at a time when others were singing about, well, not much at all. One can’t help but wonder what Lennon would have to say about some of today’s mindless artists – SMDH!

On a somber note, Chuck Berry left us on March 18, 2017. Emergency workers tried to revive him, but he was ultimately pronounced dead by his personal physician. Despite his physical absence, his legacy continues to echo through the ages. At the time of his passing, Chuck’s estimated net worth was an impressive $10 million, a testament to his incredibly successful and enduring music career spanning generations.

So, “C&B” Fam, let’s virtually raise a glass to Chuck Berry. Happy birthday to a true musical pioneer and blues virtuoso who shook the very foundations of music.
